Tori Murphy, wife of Rockies infielder Daniel Murphy, provides prom dresses for foster kids
What began as only an idea in Tori Murphy’s mind culminated in a celebratory night last year that won’t soon be forgotten. The wife of Colorado Rockies infielder Daniel Murphy provides prom dresses to high school foster kids.
Last year, she ensured 35 foster girls felt special and loved in what Tori later dubbed the “Prom Series.” Other wives of Rockies players joined in the festivities as the group enjoyed a celebratory afternoon together at the ballpark.
“We had dresses, goodie bags, hair/make up, food, baseball, and night where these high school girls felt loved. My dream this year is to host the same event on different teams across the country. To unite MLB wives and provide a community and connection to foster care girls. I am just starting this race – if you want to join and help….LET’S DO IT.”
The Rockies’ media team even made a short video of the event to circulate on their social media channels.
This year, Tori is preparing for an even bigger event with the Rockies. However, her vision is not limited to Denver; she wants to see similar Prom Series events pop up at other MLB stadiums throughout the country. She’s even begun promoting the event herself.
Tori’s efforts to give back to those who are vulnerable and often forgotten in her community stems from a deep relationship with Christ that she shares with her husband Daniel.
In a devotional for The Increase, the two opened up about the birth of their son Noah. Daniel decided to miss Opening Day in 2014 to witness his son’s birth, which drew heavy criticism. Daniel said it was a decision he made to live only for the approval of God, not other humans.
In the devotional, Daniel quoted Galatians 1:10: “Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.”
He said he loved the clarity that the Bible verse provided to the dilemma he faced.
“Paul is saying that a man or a woman cannot both please the whims and the desires of other people, and, at the same time, serve Christ,” Daniel wrote. “He’s saying exactly what I felt in my heart about that day — that in life’s biggest decisions, both a good and a bad invitation always seem to lie before us, and it becomes our decision to accept and walk into the right invitation, the right direction.”
The Murphys and their three children have found a home with the Rockies organization in the two seasons since Daniel signed a contract with the team in December 2018. When this season begins, it will be Daniel’s 12th in the major leagues. In three of those years, he was named an All-Star.
